Orchid Conditions

Note: This is our description of our greenhouse from when we lived in Colorado from 1986 through 2000. This is for your reference in designing and building a greenhouse for orchids in a cold environment.

Our greenhouse in packed full of over 500 plants. We grow mostly miniature Cattleya's and Paphiopedilum. We place plants around the greenhouse using the micro climates that exist for light and temperature. For example, the Cattleya's are shown are closest to the south facing window.

Our night temperature is set at 58° F, however we do enjoy growing some Phal's for cut flowers and just to have around. They are all grown underneath the heater so they receive additional radiant heat.

I believe strongly in good air movement and two oscillating fans are constantly on 24 hours a day. They provide good random air movement which keeps the plants healthy. Thermostats at bench level insures the greenhouse is kept at the right temperature for the plants.

The walls that do not receive direct light a lined with white bath board which is water proof. There is also a layer of R-11 insulation behind the bath board. Thus the plants are insulated from the cold and also receive reflected light off of the walls.
