Novelty Hybrids:
CA1148 (Irish Eyes 'Lemon Net x fairreanum v. album 'Jac' AM/AOS) 4-6" $40
Paph. Irish Eyes, made by the Orchid Zone, was itself a Novelty Paph. fairrieanum hybrid. It made Standard shaped flowers with voluptuous dorsals, striped and veined like its species parent. The goal here is Paph. fairrieanum style flowers of medium size on polyfloral plants.
We like Paph. Pebblepath and Paph. Diane Vickery, both multiflorals crossed with Paph. henryanum. In fact, we have been doing a lot of breeding with each. Here is a similar cross, using a very colorful multi-floral pod parent with 3 flowers open at a time. We are looking for heavy spots throughout the petals, overlaid and edged with burgundy red. Dorsals may be green, and boldly spotted.
This (brachy x Standard) style is unpredictable for quality. It all depends on the pairing. Of course, the Paph. Elfstone grex yielded some of the largest Green Standard flowers yet bloomed, so the desire here is to incorporate the large size. We have not seen any of these flower, but expect rounded flowers greenish to white in base color, possibly overlaid with pepperspots. Some may be all white, but make no promise.
Paph. Stargate is (Friendship x Skip Bartlett), so it is an blend of state-of-the-art Novelty breeding, and is one of our very favorite stud plants. It is a white flower with bold spots through petals and dorsal. It is crossed here with (Skip Bartlett x Saint Ouens Bay), which is pure white with slight spotting. We recommend these.
This cross will likely produce very round white flowers of medium brachy size on strong 6" stems, with most having pepperspots lightly distributed. Substance should be heavy.
The Paph..lsland Mist is an albinistic white flower, fat in form, on a tall stem. These will likely be similar to Paph. Woluwense (niveum x rothschildianum), but larger, and easier to bloom.
This cross is essentially brachypetalum in nature, but because of Standard hybrid genes in its pollen parent background, it incorporates new patterns of color. Expect very full, large flowers pale gold to white in base color, overlaid with cinnamon spray and veining.
The first of these we flowered was white with minimal speckling, small, and an almost-perfect Standard shape. Expect variations on that theme.
These are very rare, econd-generation Standard vinicolors., and represent the state-of-the-art for vinicolor Standard breeding. Expect medium sized flowers of round form from the Paph. Amanda. Plants are compact, and represent the 10% of the cross selected for dark leaf basal color.
This grex, first made by Outhay Viengkhou, has been awarded throughout the world. We feel this strain will be a worthy follow-up to the original.
This style of flower produces sequentially blooming green and white flowers on vigorously growing plants. Form is a blend of botanical and Standard, and although not new, we feel this style will form the basis for a new group of mass market plants. These will flower in warmer climates.
